The words pair uses, defined once, card, macrostate, tier, gate, harness, engine, realization, stage, handoff, seal, escalation, ADR, ADL, DDR, bridge file, registry, adoption file, Knowledge Base.

Every term is defined here once and linked from its first use in the Process Lifecycle. Terms are grouped by what they describe.

Work items

Card

Any work item on your board: an initiative, an epic, a story or a task. pair says "card" when the kind does not matter, for example "the delivery cycle drives one card".

Initiative, epic, story, task

The four kinds of card, from largest to smallest. An initiative is a strategic objective; an epic a feature set delivered in a few sprints; a story one slice of user value; a task one step inside a story, written inline in the story body. See Phases.

Macrostate

One of pair's canonical work-item states (Draft, Ready, In Progress, In Review, Done, Not planned), independent of your board's column names. A ## State Mapping table maps your columns to them. See Canonical states.

Draft, Ready, Done

The three macrostates the lifecycle pivots on. A card is Draft until refinement and task breakdown make it Ready; the delivery workflow takes a Ready card to Done. See Definition of Ready and Done.

Grill

A /pair-capability-grill interview: one question at a time, always with a recommendation, until you and the AI confirm a shared understanding. Refinement opens with one.

Quality and risk

Risk tier

The green, yellow or red level the quality model derives from a story's classification matrix. It decides which gates run, how much review a PR needs and what automation may pick up. See Tag-driven quality gates.

Risk tag

The risk:green, risk:yellow or risk:red label written onto a card and its PR when the project's tag projection is on. "Chromatic" means the same thing: the tier shown as a colour.

Gate

A check that must pass before a PR moves on: lint, type check, build, unit tests and so on, scaled by tier. Also the three autonomy gates below.

Autonomy gates

until, prepare and merge in ## Autonomy of tech/automation.md. They decide how far a card goes without a human: how far the cycle runs, who refines a Draft card, whether a review-approved card merges. See Adoption settings.

Escalation

What happens when a when gate condition fires or a budget is spent: the card stops as escalated, one comment on it names the reason, and a human takes over. The PR stays open.

Delivery mechanics

Lifecycle modes

Who drives the process. Assisted: pair guides you through every phase with AI, one skill at a time. Supervised: pair automates one card from start to finish. Autonomous: pair watches the backlog and applies the whole process to every card matching a criterion you set (for example all risk:green or all UI cards). They mirror driving automation levels 2, 3 and 4. See Lifecycle modes.

Stage

One judgment inside the delivery cycle: implement, verify, prepare, validate, green or merge. Each is a skill dispatched to a fresh agent. See The delivery cycle in depth.

Handoff

The file a stage writes under the run directory when it finishes. The next stage reads it; a cycle resumes from its first incomplete handoff. State is files, not conversation memory.

Seal

The commit that fixes a remediation round's failing tests as a contract. After the seal, the fixer may change production code but not a byte of the sealed tests; verification checks the bytes.

Realization

One of the three ways to drive the cycle: the in-session coordinator (/pair-workflow-cycle), the console driver (pair-cli run) or the Claude Code parallel batch. Same rules, different dispatcher. See realizations.

Run directory

.pair/working/runs/<run>/<card>/, where a cycle keeps its handoffs and log. Never loaded as context unless a skill asks for it.

Tools

Harness

An AI coding tool configured to execute pair's process: skill paths, auth, model provider, headless mode. Claude Code, Codex, pi and opencode are harnesses. See Harnesses and engines.

Engine

A process pair-cli run can drive one iteration at a time without a human: claude -p, codex, pi, opencode. A harness is usually also an engine; the roles are independent.

Bridge file

The file a tool reads to discover .pair/: AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .cursor/rules/, .github/agents/. All of them point at the same Knowledge Base. See Agent integration.

Registry

One named set of files pair-cli install and update manage, with a source, a target path and a behaviour (mirror, add, overwrite): knowledge, adoption, skills, agents, github, workflows, agent-definitions. See Configuration.

Knowledge

Knowledge Base

The guidelines, how-tos and templates installed into .pair/knowledge/, refreshed by pair-cli update. Yours to read, never to edit in place. See Knowledge Base.

Adoption file

A file under .pair/adoption/ recording one of your project's decisions: architecture.md, tech-stack.md, way-of-working.md, automation.md, risk-matrix.md. Adoption wins over the Knowledge Base and is never overwritten. See Adoption files.

ADR, ADL, DDR

The three kinds of recorded decision. An ADR (Architecture Decision Record, tech/adr/) records an architectural choice with context and consequences. An ADL entry (decision log, decision-log/) records a non-architectural project decision. A DDR (Domain Decision Record) records a domain-model decision. All three are written by /pair-capability-record-decision.
