Definition of Ready & Done

The canonical criteria that decide when a story is Ready to start and when work on it counts as Done, the fallback used when a board has no dedicated Ready state.

Companion to Canonical States: that concept defines the 5 macrostates (Draft → Ready → In Progress → Review → Done); this one defines the criteria behind two of them: when an item earns Ready (Definition of Ready) and when work on it counts as Done (Definition of Done).

Mapped board state is always the primary signal. These criteria are the fallback, used only when no board state resolves to Ready, or when a skill checks readiness directly from an item's body (e.g. a story predating this template).

Definition of Ready: 6 criteria

Each criterion maps to one section of the refined user-story template:

#CriterionVerifiable via
1Clear titleIssue title, not a placeholder
2Problem/goalStory Statement (As a / I want / So that)
3Verifiable ACAt least one Given-When-Then scenario
4EstimateFinal Story Points has a value
5DependenciesStory Dependencies present (may state "None")
6Design flagDesign: line (not required or required) reference: <link>

A criterion is unmet when its section is missing, empty, or still holds placeholder text: a partial DoR check lists every unmet criterion by name rather than guessing.

Inline task-breakdown signal: a ## Task Breakdown section with at least one checklist item (e.g. - [ ] **T-1**: [Task title]) is a first-class readiness signal on its own: it shows the item was already scoped and decomposed, and independently satisfies criteria 3–5 even on a story that predates this template. It never substitutes for the title or the problem/goal.

Definition of Done: 4 criteria

Deployment is explicitly excluded: a project may still gate deploys separately, but that's not part of this DoD:

#CriterionSource
1AC satisfiedevery Acceptance Criteria scenario verified against the diff
2PR approved per risk tierQuality Model per-tier requirements
3CI greenall automated gates passing on the merge commit
4No critical bugsno open critical/blocker defect tied to the change

Per-tier reviewer counts and SLAs aren't duplicated here: they live in the Quality Model and resolve through the same Argument > Adoption > KB default cascade. /verify-done evaluates each criterion once per session and skips ones already confirmed passing.

Readiness fallback in practice

A 3-column board (Todo / In Progress / Done) has no column mapped to Ready. An item in Todo is still recognized as Ready once all 6 DoR criteria are met on its body: no dedicated "Refined" column required. A mapped Ready state, when one exists, always wins outright over this fallback; unmet criteria are reported as a warning, never a block.
