Verify your setup

Fifteen checks that confirm pair-cli, the Knowledge Base, the bridge files and your assistant work together.

Run through this once after the Quickstart and bootstrap. Ten minutes.

The CLI

  • node --version prints 18 or higher
  • pair-cli --version prints a version (manual download: ./pair-cli --version from the extracted folder; on Windows use WSL2 or Git Bash)
  • pair-cli --help lists install, update, run, package
  • pair-cli install --list-targets prints the Asset Registries block (expected output)

The project

  • .pair/knowledge/guidelines/ and .pair/knowledge/how-to/ exist and are not empty
  • .pair/adoption/tech/ holds architecture.md, tech-stack.md, way-of-working.md with your decisions, not the templates
  • AGENTS.md exists and points at .pair/ (your own file with a pointer counts, if you kept it with --skip-registries agents)
  • .claude/skills/ holds the pair-* skill directories
  • pair-cli kb-validate passes
  • pair-cli update-link --dry-run reports no broken links

Your assistant

  • A new session in your assistant describes the project from .pair/adoption/ when asked
  • /pair-next answers with a next step, not with "no project found"
  • /pair-process-bootstrap reports an already-configured project as confirmed, not re-asked

Your tools

  • The PM tool in way-of-working.md is the one you use, and a card moved on the board changes what /pair-next reports
  • git status shows .pair/adoption/ committed and .pair/knowledge/ either committed or ignored, deliberately

Anything unchecked: Troubleshooting covers install and permission problems; Adopt pair in an existing repository covers a repository that already had agent files.

Next: the Process Lifecycle, how a day with pair runs.
